67. Another Eternity - Purity Ring (2015)

Electro-pop

Another Eternity operates almost entirely somewhere way up in the stratosphere. The lofty production plays like a soundtrack to a journey through the clouds. Vocalist Megan James’ voice borders on angelic at times, crisp and sweet, lilting hypnotically high above the earth’s surface. Ephemeral electronic beats bolster entrancing orchestral melodies that are easy to get lost in. But beneath all that, there’s a striking poetic darkness that ebbs to the surface with frequency. The result is alluring, unsettling and increasingly difficult to resist.

The other half of the duo, Corin Roddick flexes serious production prowess throughout. “Dust Hymn” is an insidious trap tune building to the album’s climax, “Flood on the Floor”, which waxes spiritual as James’s siren song. “She read your mind and called it a terror...wading through the spirits like a flood on the floor”. She paints a foreboding picture with sugary sweetness. Meanwhile, strobing hi-hats dance with ethereal bells building to a blast of synths in the epic chorus. Another Eternity is a tragic beauty that is simply impossible to look away from.
