Indie Rock

Released in the wake of a car accident which nearly claimed his life, the aptly named Heal (2014) became a truly rehabilitating tool for Timothy Showalter of Strand of Oaks. Despite the darkness it was born out of, there’s a lightness and optimism throughout the album, even as it works through periods of extreme pain, betrayal and the resulting isolationism. “Shut In”, as well as its accompanying music video are remarkable exercises in self-reflection during periods of extreme turmoil. They exquisitely showcase how a sharp and wisely-tuned introspective honesty can be a powerful asset in overcoming tribulations in life.

The album is a therapeutic long, hard look in the rear view mirror, reflecting on past relationships with lovers, friends and family, the causes and effects of substance abuse and the loss of friends and idols. The simplicity of the songs are what make them work, relying on fundamental emotional beacons of the past to hit home. And they hit hard. Showalter’s vocals are infused with blue-collar midwestern charm, not hitting any crazy notes or knocking anyone’s socks off, but they’re real and they’re powerful. His gift is his willingness to share all of himself. Heal is genuine soul-baring at its finest.
